Ashwagandha is trending on TikTok – and here’s why

Have you ever heard of the herbal supplement ashwagandha? This stress-busting natural remedy is currently going viral on TikTok, but we promise this isn’t just a passing fad – there’s a good reason for its popularity.

But what is ashwagandha, and how can it help us tackle stress? Read on to discover what you need to know about this trending plant extract.

What is ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha, also known as Indian ginseng or winter cherry, is an adaptogenic plant that has been used in Ayurvedic medicine in Asia for centuries. As with other adaptogens, ashwagandha is thought to primarily help the body deal with stress and improve your overall wellbeing. Because of this, it is quickly becoming the go-to for anyone seeking a Zen moment.

Usually, extracted from the plant itself, this natural remedy can be taken as a supplement or drunk as a tea, depending on your preference. Just remember to speak to your healthcare provider before including anything new in your wellness routine.

We’ve already mentioned ashwagandha’s potential ability to help with stress management, and we’ll go into more detail about it soon (stay tuned!), but what other health benefits might it have for the body? Take a look at the following list to see why you should consider keeping it on your radar:

  • May support libido and boost sex drive
  • May reduce blood sugar
  • May reduce inflammation
  • May help with brain function and focus
  • May support a good night’s rest

While these suggestions look promising, it’s important to remember more definitive research is needed. However, the best way to  see if it works for you is to try to safely incorporate it into your routine.

How does ashwagandha help with stress?

Along with eating the right mood-boosting foods and exercise, a natural remedy like ashwagandha might help you manage stress.

According to research, ashwagandha may help the adrenal glands by lowering cortisol levels, therefore reducing stress and anxiety. Cortisol –  often dubbed the ‘stress hormone’ – is released when your mind or body detects a stressful situation in which a ‘fight or flight’ response is needed.  This can then increase your heart rate and blood pressure, while slowing down signals to ‘non essential’ bodily processes, such as the digestive and reproductive systems. Lower cortisol levels are therefore correlated with a lower stress rate.

In another study, taking ashwagandha root daily for two months reduced cortisol levels by nearly 25%.

So it’s no surprise that people are anecdotally singing its praises on TikTok. However, though the research so far is encouraging, more research is required to confirm its benefits.

If you suffer from stress, consult your doctor before adding any new supplements into your routine. It’s important to also seek help to tackle stress at the cause, too.
